Found three suitable men for Mr. Sutter. Well, two viable, one extra.
Mr. Sunday Silence: Older, proud union. Missing an eye, maybe deaf on that side? Hard to tell, not my bushiness. Strong, trustworthy, already in Mr. Sutter's graces. Told him I'd be using him to get through to Mr. Sutter regarding his choices of a new place to locate the ranch, and he likes the pay. Did not tell him about my other request yet. Likes dominoes(!!!). Rides well.
Mr. Atticus(Didn’t catch his last name): Around my age from the looks of it. I think I missed something while making Isadora dinner, likes beans and/or does... something? Quite friendly with a priest. Rides well.
Father Lucas Sinclair: Catholic. Most of the men are looking forward to having a priest travel with us, so there's that. Looks consumptive but no cough. Can't get near a horse without getting kicked but walked it off well. Must’ve just missed him.
Planning on trying to tell Mr. Silence once he’s more settled in. If he takes it decently, and from what I’ve heard of the war I don’t doubt he will, I won’t have to worry quite so much any longer. If he doesn’t, can likely claim a trick of the light? Or else suggest the kind of epilspy one aquires from fighting, like Papi. I doubt it would hurt his standing here. If anything, he likely just won’t get put on night watch.
Books for Isa:
Got caught up in hiring people, forgot to exchange. New newspaper had a couple good things to practice, but was a long day for her. Fussy and hard to get down, wasn't going to do something like that.
At store got:
Prices up. Less than I thought.
No seeds. 1lb dried maize. Carrots no good. Oil lantern, should've gotten food too. No sugar, got her a candy. Soap and Chalk.
Javier using up the lard, will need to do more cooking than expected.
Maverick was upset with me today, she didn't get out much. Feel bad but can't be helped this kind of day. Not looking forward to tying my hands up tonight. Hopefully will not need much rest.
